Jean-Pierre Bartoli is a professor at the University Sorbonne. Many of his publications are devoted to musical language and musical aesthetics of the 18th and 19th centuries, Berlioz and the exotic in music. Co-editor of Dictionnaire Berlioz (Fayard) and Antoine Reicha, compositeur and théoricien (Olms), he has written L’Harmonie classique et romantique (Minerve), and, with Jeanne Roudet, L’Essor du romantisme, la fantaisie pour clavier de CPE Bach à Franz Liszt (Vrin). He has written three chapters on the exotic in music, rhetoric and musical narrativity in Musiques’ Encyclopedia (Actes-Sud) and has just completed the volume Gabriel Fauré’s Complete Work published by Bärenreiter. Since 2017, he has directed the Société française d’Analyse musicale (SFAM).
