Günter Pichler, Stauffer, 2025

Günter Pichler at Stauffer

The Alban Berg Quartet continues to live on even after its disbandment in 2008. Its mission endures has a noble purpose: to train new generations of musicians and to carry on — and serve as a reference point for — that great interpretative tradition of which the Viennese ensemble is undeniably one of the most illustrious pioneers.

A premier destination for advanced musical training, the Stauffer Academy has also become a natural home for some of the world’s most important musicians. Among them is Günter Pichler, a prominent figure on the international music scene, best known for his role as first violin of the legendary Alban Berg Quartet. Once again this year, he accepted the Academy’s invitation with his characteristic enthusiasm.

Affable, empathetic, and marked by the kind of unassuming nature that only true masters possess, Pichler — on May 13 and 14 in Cremona — led the Stauffer ensembles deep into that emotional intensity, extraordinary virtuosity, and flawless execution that have always been his hallmarks, as well as the signature traits of the Berg Quartet. A truly one-of-a-kind experience, his way of making and conveying music continues to inspire and move — ad libitum!
