“Stradivari. Soul of Cremona. The Restoration of the Stauffer Cello”
On Thursday 7 May at 6 pm, the documentary Stradivari, anima di Cremona. Il restauro del violoncello Stauffer (Stradivari, Soul of Cremona. The Restoration of the Stauffer Cello) will be presented in an advance screening at Cinema Filo in Cremona. A project of the Stauffer Foundation, produced by 3D Produzioni for Sky Arte, the film centres on the recent restoration of the Stradivari cello “Stauffer ex Cristiani”, part of the Foundation’s collection.
Following this thread, the documentary unfolds as a journey through Cremona’s cultural life: its historic squares and monumental churches, the craft of its luthiers, the educational excellence of the Accademia Stauffer, and the rich heritage of the Museo del Violino. Set within the city where the art of violin making is rooted and recognised as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, the restoration becomes part of a wider narrative that has shaped Cremona’s identity for centuries.
Through the voices of distinguished professors — including Salvatore Accardo, the Quartetto di Cremona and Giovanni Sollima — alongside those of emerging talents from the Accademia Stauffer, the film weaves together tradition and future, memory and research. The journey culminates in the moment when the cello resounds once more after its restoration, its voice restored to full tonal integrity and expressive power.
